It’s important to delete your data to protect your privacy if you’re selling your phone or giving it away. If you don’t, and your phone falls into the wrong hands, your digital identity, bank details, and private photos can all be stolen. Read our guide below to permanently clear personal data from your Apple or Android phone.
To wipe the data from your iOS smartphone you need to reset the phone to its original factory settings. Read our step-by-step guide on How to reset an iPhone.
Apple devices automatically come with an encryption feature, which makes it impossible to recover deleted data.
You also need to restore the factory settings to delete data from your Android phone. However, there’s an extra step you need to carry out first. Before you restore the original settings you’ll need to encrypt it. When you do this, deleted data cannot be recovered. To encrypt data on an Android phone follow these steps:
1. Open “Settings”.
2. Go to “Security”.
3. Select “Encrypt phone”.
The function names may be different depending on your device model and make. If you can’t find what you’re looking for, try using the search engine in your phone settings.
Be prepared for this to take some time. In some cases, it will take at least an hour to encrypt a phone. Before you start the process it’s worth connecting your phone to a power supply or charging your phone fully first.
Once your phone is encrypted, follow the steps to restore factory settings using our guide on How to reset my phone.
Before selling or giving away your phone, don’t forget to remove the SIM card and SD memory card too.
